The Meaning of Pain: Understanding Your Upper-Middle Back ❤️🩹

The upper-middle back is the area between your shoulder blades. It's often referred to as the back of the heart. There are many reasons you might experience pain here. Perhaps you sit hunched over a desk or phone. Maybe you lift a baby or spend time gardening. Any activity that requires you to look down or lift frequently can contribute to discomfort.
But there’s more to this pain than just physical strain. There’s an energetic resonance in this area worth exploring. Think of it as unlocking the spiritual meaning of pain in the upper-middle back.
Back of the Heart
Energetically, the front of your body and heart is where you project your energy outward.
The Front of Our Hearts
It’s focused on what others think and need from us.
It’s about how we care for others.
It’s how we engage with our communities and families.
The Back of the Heart
This area is where we receive energy.
How much attention are you giving to your own care?
Self-Care is a Powerful Practice
Taking care of yourself daily is essential. It’s not always easy to balance caring for others with maintaining healthy boundaries. However, the rewards for your health and well-being are significant.
When you don’t receive enough support from loved ones, it can trigger feelings of rejection. This can hit a core wound, leaving you with thoughts like, “I am not good enough” or “I am not worthy.”
Reflective Questions
Here are some questions to consider:
How am I taking care of my body?
How am I nurturing my emotional self?
How am I supporting my intellectual growth?
Do I feel supported by others?
What help could I be asking for that I am not currently seeking?
Upper-Middle Back Pain Rooted in the Past
The back of your body represents the past—what lies behind you.
Sometimes, when you feel pain in the back of your heart, it may be a reminder of something from your past that relates to your present situation. Often, these memories involve deep emotional pain, such as grief or rejection.
Questions for Reflection
Consider these questions:
What past experiences feel similar to what I’m experiencing now?
Is there something from my past that I am still holding onto?
Have I fully processed my grief or pain from a past experience?
Visualization for Letting Go
Many of us cling to negative experiences from the past. We often wish we could simply decide to let go. However, true release requires understanding why we’re still holding on.
What is the root cause of this pain? What intention does it serve?
Visualization Exercise
Try this visualization exercise focused on letting go:
Focus on the discomfort in the back of your heart. ❤️
What does it feel like? Is it solid or transparent?
What does it look like? What color is it?
Ask this part of you what it needs you to know or understand.
Listen closely; it will have a message. What does it say?
This is part of the work. Once you understand this part of yourself that feels stuck, you can respectfully ask about its purpose.
Usually, it has a good intention, like keeping you safe. But this intention may have originated in childhood and become outdated, restricting you in adulthood.
Once your mind understands this part and its intention, and you decide you no longer need this stagnant energy in your body, you can let it go.
The Work I Do with Clients: Somatics-Embodied

Releasing Pain in the Upper-Middle Back
Practices like yoga, acupuncture, and deep tissue massage can significantly alleviate tension in this area.
However, often the upper-middle back will not release until something changes emotionally. Take time to focus on your upper back. Reflect on the questions above to discover the spiritual meaning of pain in your upper-middle back.
Consider what you might need to do to shift how you support yourself. Think about how you are being supported and what lessons from the past may be trying to reach you in the present.
