The Anatomy of a Corporate Trigger

In the modern tech world of the Bay Area, your body hasn't caught up to your job title. It doesn't know the difference between a predator lunging from a bush and the agitation of an "As per my last email" notification.
When that notification pings, your red-side nerves don't see a screen; they see a threat to your status or survival. Here is how that reaction actually plays out:
The Survival Pivot: The moment you feel stressed by a workload or a deadline, the Sympathetic Chain reallocates your biological budget. It pulls energy away from your stomach and immune system because it thinks, "Why waste energy digesting a salad if we might not survive the afternoon?"
The "Bodyguard" Armor: The nerves going to your heart and lungs demand a faster pulse and shallower breath. This is why your shoulders end up at your ears. Your body is physically armor-plating itself, preparing for a fight that is happening entirely over Wi-Fi.
Hyper-Vigilance as Performance: Because your pupils dilate and your brain sharpens to scan for "danger," you might feel like you're being productive. But you aren't thriving; you're just being hyper-vigilant. Your internal security team is working a double shift on a war that ended years ago.
The Vagus Nerve: Your Internal Volume Knob
If the Sympathetic Chain is the "Panic Button," the Vagus Nerve is
the "Volume Knob."
It runs from your brainstem all the way down to your gut, acting as a two-way radio.
When you are in a chronic hustle, your Vagus Nerve gets "toned" toward defense.
It starts broadcasting a signal of "Not Safe" 24/7, which is why even on a Sunday at the beach, you might still feel that low-level hum of anxiety.
You’re physically incapable of relaxing because the Vagus Nerve hasn't been given
the "All Clear" signal.
