Understanding your inner world, An IFS Perspective!

When you are in the thick of healing, it can feel like a cacophony inside your head. It is easy to feel overwhelmed or "broken" by the conflicting urges within you.
In my practice at Somatics-Embodied, I help clients recognize that these are not signs of a "broken" mind, but a fragmented system of distinct parts trying to survive.
Synthesizing my clinical findings in nervous system integration with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model founded by Richard Schwartz, we can map this internal landscape to find a path back to peace.
The Voice of the Exile: The Inner Child
The inner child speaks first. This part speaks in love and confusion, asking why they couldn’t be loved, if something is wrong with them, or if they are unworthy of being chosen.
In IFS, these are known as Exiles.
These parts carry the "burdens" the raw memories and sensations of being hurt, shamed, or frightened. In our sessions, we often find these parts trapped in a Freeze or collapse state. Because they are "locked in the closet" by protective parts, their longing for reassurance becomes a heavy weight on the heart.
The Voice of the Firefighter: The Adolescent Self
Following the child is the adolescent inner self, loud, burning, and unfiltered. This part is angry, wanting justice and revenge. It hates how easily they walked away and how deeply it wounded the system.
As Schwartz identified, these are your Firefighters. They jump into action the moment an Exile’s pain feels too heavy.
This is the state of Hyper-arousal a restless, high-energy state that screams for an escape through anger, distraction, or impulsive behavior to douse the "fire" of the child's pain.
The Voice of the Manager: The Current Version
Then there is the current version of you. Older. Tired. You don’t want explanations or closure anymore; you just want peace, calm, and silence. A life that doesn’t feel heavy to live.
These are the Managers. Their role is proactive; they keep you functional by maintaining control. While they seek peace, they often do so by numbing or over-working to ensure the child is never triggered again.
My work at Somatics-Embodied focuses on helping these tired Managers step back so the system can finally breathe.
The Seat of the Soul: The Self
Beyond these three voices lies what Schwartz calls the Self. This is your core essence, the "Soul" that longs for stillness.
At Somatics-Embodied, we believe everyone has this healthy, healing Self at their core, regardless of their past trauma.
Healing as Integration

This infographic captures the main structure of the internal landscape.
It places the 'Self' (the Soul) at the center as the source of leadership and calm (represented by the glowing sun).
Healing is not about "fixing" the child or "killing" the anger.
It is the process of the Self (the Soul) witnessing all three voices without becoming them.
It is learning to listen to all three without letting any one of them overwhelm you in a Hyper-Protective Survival Mode, creating Anxiety, Fear, and a Feeling of Powerlessness.
It is the act of the Self stepping into leadership to:
Comfort the Child (The Exile): They no longer feel alone; they feel safe.
Soften the Anger (The Firefighter): They no longer have to be in hyper-vigilance; it is safe to rest.
Give the Soul Peace (The Manager): They can step down and allow the Self to be in control, moving the system from "surviving" to "being."
That is not just recovery; that is the expansion of life. By differentiating the Self from these extreme roles, we move from a state of survival into a soul-aligned strategy for living.
Which voice is speaking the loudest today?
Is the child needing love, the teenager seeking justice, or the manager demanding silence?
Can you find the space within to listen to all three from a place of quiet, compassionate observation?
That is not just recovery; that is the expansion of life.
By differentiating the Self from these extreme roles, we move from a state of survival into a soul-aligned strategy for living.
