The IFS Internal Map

The Internal Landscape: A Synthesis of IFS and Somatic Wisdom

Based on the work of Richard Schwartz and clinical findings on nervous system integration.

When we experience loss or trauma, our psyche fragments to protect our core essence.

This fragmentation creates an internal "family" of parts, each trying to survive the same event through different strategies.

The Inner Child (The Exiles)

As identified by Schwartz, these are the Exiles.

They are the youngest parts of us, carrying the raw "burdens" of the past.

  • The Voice: "Why wasn't I enough? Am I unworthy of being chosen?"

  • The Somatic State: Freeze / Collapse. When an Exile is triggered, the nervous system often feels heavy, small, or paralyzed by a deep ache of loneliness.

The Teenage Self (The Firefighters)

When the pain of the Exile threatens to flood the system, the Firefighters rush in.

This is the "loud, burning" teenage voice that demands justice.

  • The Voice: "I want them to hurt like I do. I want revenge."

  • The Somatic State: Hyper-arousal (Fight/Flight). This part generates heat, restlessness, and impulsive energy (anger, bingeing, or workaholism) to douse the "fire" of the inner child's pain.

The Current/Tired Self (The Managers)

The Managers are the proactive protectors.

They want to keep you functional and "safe" by ensuring you never get close enough to be hurt again.

  • The Voice: "I just want silence. I don't want to feel anything anymore."

  • The Somatic State: Functional Freeze. Managers often keep the system in a state of rigid "calm" or numbing to prevent the Exiles from being triggered or the Firefighters from reacting.

The Seat of the Soul: The Self

The "soul" longing for stillness that you describe is what Schwartz calls the Self. This is not a part, but your core essence. It is the only part of the system that has the capacity to lead and heal.

Healing as Integration

Healing is not about "fixing" the child or "killing" the anger.

It is the process of the Self (the Soul) witnessing all three voices without becoming them.

  • To Comfort the Child: Providing the Exile with the reassurance it never received.

  • To Soften the Anger: Acknowledging the Firefighter’s protection so it can finally rest.

  • To Give the Soul Peace: Allowing the Manager to step back so the system can move from "surviving" to "being.

The IFS System Overview Diagram

This infographic captures the main structure of the internal landscape.

It places the 'Self' (the Soul) at the center as the source of leadership and calm (represented by the glowing sun).

Surrounding the Self are the three protective parts, illustrated with distinct visual identities:

  • The Exiles (The Inner Child): Shown huddled on a cloud, holding a burdened heart. (Top Left)

  • The Firefighters (The Teenage Self): Represented with an active fire extinguisher, reacting fiercely to emotional pain. (Bottom Right)

  • The Managers (The Functional Adult): Depicted with a clipboard and shield, aiming to maintain control and organization. (Top Right)

Which voice is speaking the loudest today?

  • Is the child needing love, the teenager seeking justice, or the manager demanding silence?

  • Can you find the space within to listen to all three from a place of quiet, compassionate observation?

The Seat of the Soul: The Self

Beyond these three voices lies what Schwartz calls the Self.

This is your core essence, the "Soul" that longs for stillness.

At Somatics-Embodied, we believe everyone has this healthy, healing Self at their core, regardless of their past trauma.

Healing is learning to listen to all three voices without letting any one of them Overwhemling you in Hyper-Over-Protecinot-Survial-Mode createting, Anxiexty, Fear and a Feeling of Powerlessness.

It is the act of the Self stepping into leadership to:

  • Comfort the child (The Exile) No longer feels alone, they feel safe.

  • Soften the anger (The Firefighter) No longer has to be in hyper-vigilance, its safe.

  • Give the soul the peace (The Manager) Can step down, and allow the self be in-control.

That is not just recovery; that is the expansion of life.

By differentiating the Self from these extreme roles, we move from a state of survival into a soul-aligned strategy for living.
