You are the anchor for your home
When you take the time to calm your own body, you change the way your child experiences you
You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be steady
Parenting a child struggling with mental health or addiction often feels like walking a tightrope in the middle of a hurricane.
As parents, our instinct is to "fix" the crisis, to reason, to negotiate, and to pour all our energy into stabilizing our child.
Yet, so many parents find themselves exhausted and frustrated, wondering why their best efforts don't seem to yield lasting change.
The missing piece isn't a new strategy or a different therapist; it is the nervous system.
A Professional Approach to Calm
I am Ashley Howitt, a skilled Somatic-Hypnotherapist and the founder of Somatics-Embodied.
I know how hard it is to stay balanced when your child is in crisis.
My work helps parents move out of that "stuck" survival mode by clearing the hidden, body-based stress patterns that keep you reactive.

The Biology of the Anchor
We often think of parenting as a psychological or behavioral challenge, but at its core, it is biological. Children, regardless of their age, are biologically tethered to their parent’s nervous system.
When we operate from a place of "anxious urgency," our children feel it instantly.
They aren’t just listening to our words; they are scanning our heart rate, our muscle tension, and our micro-expressions to determine if they are safe. If you are living in a state of emergency, you cannot lead your child to a place of safety. To support them, you must first become the steady shore to their storm.
Why Traditional Approaches Often Stall
Many parents have spent years in talk therapy with their children, only to see the same behaviors repeat.
This happens because trauma and deep-seated stress are not stored in the logic center of the brain, they are stored in the body and the subconscious.
When a child is in crisis, their brain is stuck in survival mode.
You cannot reason with a brain that is fighting for survival. Somatic tools allow us to bypass the guarded mind and speak directly to the autonomic nervous system, helping to recalibrate the body’s physical response to stress.
Reclaiming Your Agency: Three Simple Tools
You can start shifting the energy in your home.
Reclaim your own stability.
Here are three somatic tools to use when the pressure rises:
The "Rooting" Exercise: Pause and feel your feet firmly on the floor. Acknowledge your weight in the chair.
Remind yourself:
"I am here, my feet are on the ground, and I am safe, we are safe".
The "Double Exhale": Inhale through your nose, then let out a slow, long exhale through your mouth (twice as long as the inhale).
This manually stimulates the vagus nerve and hits the "brake" on your fight-or- flight response.
The "Hand-on-Heart": Place a hand firmly over the center of your chest.
This physical touch reminds your brain that you are a separate, stable individual, not a part of the chaos unfolding.

Boundaries: The Ultimate Form of Leadership
Many parents fear that setting boundaries is an act of abandonment.
It is the opposite. Boundaries are the container that keeps the relationship safe.
When things escalate, use this simple script:
"I love you too much to participate in this behavior right now. I am going to step away to get calm so I can show up for you later. We can talk when we are both steady".
Then, follow through. Walk away. Do not argue. Do not justify. By removing yourself from the chaos, you are modeling nervous system leadership. You are teaching your child that you are not a participant in the storm, you are the anchor that remains steady regardless of the weather.
The Path Forward
When you take the time to calm your own body, you change the way your child experiences you, they regulate to your grounded-lower frequency system, to return calm and regulate their system.
You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be steady.
If you are a parent seeking to reclaim your stability and clear the subconscious patterns keeping you stuck, professional support is available.
You don't need to be perfect to lead your family, but you do need to be steady.
When you are constantly operating in 'fix-it' mode, you are inadvertently signaling danger to your child’s brain.
As a Somatic-Hypnotherapist, I help parents reset their own nervous systems so they can stop reacting and start leading.
I utilize a structured, somatic approach to help parents lead with clarity, and
I provide coded invoices (CPT 90880) to support your journey with insurance reimbursement.
I’d love to chat about how we can build your capacity to remain the calm, clear-headed leader your family needs right now! Free Discovery call
