Rule 1: Your Mind Does What It Thinks You Want It To Do

Updated: Sep 8

Before we can truly shift our lives, our businesses, or our daily stress, we have to understand the operating system running beneath the surface: the subconscious mind.

The subconscious does not respond to logic or willpower alone;

it speaks the language of the nervous system, imagery, and physical sensation.

These 7 Rules of the Mind outline how our thoughts, biological survival instincts, and internal narratives shape every physical reaction and choice we make.

When we combine this mental awareness with somatic-body-led practices, we stop fighting our biology and start rewriting our patterns from the inside out.

Here is how Rule 1 shows up in our everyday lives, and how we can use the body to guide it back into alignment and attunement to Self:

Rule 1: Your Mind Does What It Thinks You Want It To Do

Every moment of our day is governed by an invisible, hyper-literal servant: the subconscious mind.

It does not judge our choices, weigh our moral intentions, or filter our sarcasm.

It takes whatever instruction we hand it, often through our habitual thoughts and physical bracing, and executes it as a direct command.

When we tell ourselves we cannot handle the day, our nervous system immediately complies by shutting down our capacity to engage.

Your thoughts create your emotional state, which in turn creates your behaviors, outcomes, and relationships.

  • Somatic Feeling Associated: A sudden heaviness in the limbs, a feeling of being tethered to gravity with lead weights, or a foggy, static-filled sensation behind the eyes that signals the body has accepted a directive to freeze or give up.

  • Real-Life Situation: You sit down to complete a project, but your hands immediately open a new browser tab or reach for your phone while you tell yourself, "I just can’t focus today."

  • Somatic Work: Your mind took your internal state as an instruction manual. Pause. Take your time to ground and settle into your body. Feel your feet flat on the floor and take a deliberate, slow exhale.

  • Notice the tension in your jaw, soften it, and whisper a clean, conscious direction to your nervous system:

"Right now, we are resting our hands and breathing."

Show your body through physical posture that safety and focus are the current directives.

Reflection & Integration for Rule 1

  • What programs or patterns have I been running that I am ready to switch off?

  • What positive changes or outcomes do I want to begin installing?

Write down one old consistent instruction to recognize and release, and one new directive to give your mind today!
